The students, staff and community members at JL Couroux (CECCE) worked hard last year as an Ontario EcoSchool. After learning about composting and the economic and environmental advantages that it can bring, the students decided they needed to take action. But how?

Working as a team, the students created a petition to bring compost to their community in Carleton Place, ON. The petition asked that students school staff, and community members sign to confirm that “We, the members of the school JL Couroux would like the Town of Carleton Place to offer a weekly composting service to the people of the region. To do this, we need your SUPPORT!”

The EcoTeam worked hard to get signatures and ended up getting the attention of the deputy mayor, who visited JL Couroux to meet with students and congratulate them on their efforts. He even invited the students who were involved in collecting signatures for the petition to speak at a city council meeting – demonstrating that big things can happen when you make your opinions heard!
