International Walk to School Month: October 2019

World Food Day: October 16, 2019
- Explore the awesome UN’s World Food Day website to learn about their 2019 campaign “Healthy Days for a #ZeroHunger World” and learn how you can take action on a global scale and in your local community.
- Make use of our Local Food Awareness and Action campaign kit to learn about the benefits of local food sources.
- Investigate setting up a vermicomposting system in your school with our Compost Family Feud lesson plan, and learn about renewable energy systems by building a solar oven.
Waste Reduction Week in Canada: October 21-27, 2019
- Visit Waste Reduction Week in Canada’s website to learn about the dangers of plastic and pollution, and how your school can take action to combat waste of all kinds and work towards a sustainable future.
- Visit shorelinecleanup.ca for resources that focus on cleaning shorelines and waterways.
- Organize a school clean up with our School Grounds Clean Up campaign kit and invite the whole school to participate.
- Dive in to our curriculum-connected lesson plans on waste reduction for various grade levels, including Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: The Lives of Everyday Objects, What a Waste?, and the 3Rs.
Take Me Outside Day: October 23, 2019
- Take Me Outside has a number of tips, resources, and activities for your school to get outdoors and be active while learning in, about, and for the environment.
- Consider having students use field journals to learn about leaf identification, explore their environment by creating artwork, and embark on an educational nature scavenger hunt.
