It’s been a busy month for EcoSchools! Many of you have been creating, organizing and participating in amazing Earth Month events all April long, and if that wasn’t enough, it’s also certification season!

The final certification deadline is this Friday, April 27 at 11:59pm, and if you haven’t already submitted, we suggest you do so as early as possible to avoid slow server times and the stress of leaving everything to the last minute.

How to claim May/June campaigns

Remember, you can still claim lessons, field trips, and campaigns happening after April 27 in your submission with evidence of planning for those activities. Be specific: details should include the activity’s date and how it is grounded in learning about a particular environmental issue.

See the Certification Guide for more details.

What happens to my application after I submit?

We’re glad you asked! We’ve created a simple and shareable infographic detailing the process that takes place after the April 27 deadline, from submission, to assessment, and finally to certification standing and school celebrations.

Greening and Cleaning

Spring is the perfect time to explore and develop campaigns and lessons around School Ground Greening. Here are three ideas to get you going:

  • Run a local food campaign: Host school discussions about local food. Your EcoTeam can pose questions such as: What is local food? Where did my food come from? In what ways is eating local better for the environment?
  • Learn about the magic of mulch: Mulch, a layer of organic material spread on top of gardens or around trees and shrubs, is a nutrient-rich and easy method of encouraging healthy plant growth.  Get students thinking about how mulch can improve the school ground greenery and lead a mulching lesson.
  • Identify leaves and trees: Make use of our lesson plan that teaches students tree and leaf identification skills via field journals.
