EcoReviews: Set goals for your follow-up!

Now that you have completed the initial EcoReviews, you can plan for the rest of the year. Identify areas for improvement and set measurable goals to achieve results your EcoTeam can be proud of. Here are some ideas to make a difference between now and the end of April:

  • Lights: Many schools are now outfitted with automatic lights – but we’ve heard that sometimes sensors result in lights being kept on longer than they would with a manual switch. Ensure students understand how sensors are activated in order to minimize energy use.
  • Monitors: Make it a regular practice to flip-the-switch on monitors at the end of class to prevent wasted light energy. To combat phantom power, use power-bars for computer banks whenever possible.
  • Blinds: Taking a few seconds to close the blinds and curtains at the end of the school day can go a long way towards moderating indoor temperature (especially on sunny, warm days).

Make a splash with an eco campaign

With spring around the corner, we recommend you plan an Environmental Stewardship campaign to rally the whole school to eco-action! Campaigns are one of the most meaningful ways for your EcoTeam to invite their peers to take action for an environmental issue. With some good ideas and templates to get you started, we’re confident you can make a splash this spring.

Collect student work

Have you been planning lessons that involve learning in, about, and for the environment? This is a good time to collect student work for the Curriculum section of your online application! Whether you share photos of student work, writing samples, lesson plans (for lessons to come), or fill out the Field Trip template, this is an opportunity to show us how your environmental learning is embedded into teaching practice at your school. Need an idea or two? Visit EcoSchools in Your Classroom for ways to connect your classroom activities to the six sections of our program.
