Friday, January 26 is the deadline to input the results from your initial EcoReviews. In our last newsletter, we shared tips on the Energy Conservation portion; now we’re here to help once more with tips for making the most of your Waste Minimization EcoReviews.

  • Ask questions! Not sure if there is compost collection in your school’s cafeteria or classrooms? Talk to custodial staff to get the scoop. You may find that there are are bins for food scraps and other compostable materials that you didn’t know about!
  • Signage is key. Even if your school has a paper and/or container recycling system, if the school community doesn’t know where to place what, these systems won’t be effective!
  • If you’re finding contamination in waste receptacles (e.g., wax-lined coffee cups in the paper recycling bin or plastic juice containers in the garbage bin), get crafty and share what goes where with engaging displays around waste receptacles.
  • Assessing regular behaviours can lead to making big changes for the environment! Identify one or two questions from your initial EcoReviews that your EcoTeam can focus on leading up to your follow-up EcoReviews in April.

Initial EcoReviews are an opportunity to spark transformation. We often hear about how EcoReviews are the first step towards implementing better systems and communication – from reusing paper, to waste-free lunches – in order to reduce your school’s environmental impact. For example, ÉÉP Carrefour jeunesse (CEPEO) implemented a complete waste system (paper, plastic and compost) in just one year – resulting in diverting waste that would previously have gone straight to landfill! By creating a plan to reduce waste, they achieved their goals in a short timeframe.
