Saint-Nicolas Catholic Elementary School (CSDCCS) is a great example for EcoSchools to follow in connecting learning and action in the area of Environmental Stewardship. This year, teachers and students on the EcoTeam came up with a campaign called “Save the bees !”

How did this campaign unfold? Here are the key elements:

  • The EcoTeam made morning announcements to share why bees are important for healthy ecosystems.
  • Students created posters to demonstrate the importance of saving the bees and ensure visibility throughout the school.
  • They also ran a contest to challenge their peers to answer questions about pollinator health and biodiversity. They went around to classes, collecting responses in a box, and announced them over the Intercom. Students who answered correctly won seeds to plant in order to attract bees to the school grounds!

Thanks to these activities, Saint-Nicolas students learned about the role that bees play in the food chain and that we collectively need to take action to protect their habitat and become stewards for these fascinating creatures.
