As you probably know, this month is International Walk to School Month. We were thrilled to see a flurry of social media activity and plenty of photos showing how school communities celebrated active and sustainable transportation.

Here is how school communities walked, rolled, and wheeled to school in October:

  • St. Marguerite d’Youville (HWCDSB) organized a special Walk and Roll Yellow Day in collaboration with the City of Hamilton’s Smart Commute and Public Health unit. 80% of students participated in Yellow Day, creating a beautiful human star to showcase their eco spirit!
  • Fred C Cook PS (SCDSB) partnered with the South Simcoe Police to award badges to encourage young students to walk to school.
  • St Jean Marie Vianney (DPCDSB) students walked, scooted, and rolled to school.
  • Rick Hansen PS (YRDSB) encouraged a little exercise and fresh air by reminding students that it generally takes only 15 minutes to walk 1km.
  • John Galt PS (UGDSB) shared snapshots of flora and fauna on their walks to school. Walk to school, or flock to school?
  • The Holy Cross (OCSB) Green Team worked with the Ottawa Safety Council to learn about pedestrian safety for young students.
