With support from the Ontario Ministry of Energy, we aim to engage over one million students in environmental education and energy conservation over the next three years.

Ontario Ministry of Energy is investing $1.35 million in Ontario EcoSchools to support environmental learning and action in schools, announced today at a special event at Woodroffe High School in Ottawa Carleton DSB.

The Ontario EcoSchools program currently certifies 1,765 schools, which accounts for 36% of the total schools in the province. This new Ministry support will enhance four key initiatives:

  • providing support to schools certifying with Ontario EcoSchools;
  • encouraging schools to attain Platinum certification, the highest level achievable in the program;
  • conducting a pilot to test student-friendly, online energy dashboards which monitor and display school energy consumption; and
  • expanding public outreach efforts through increased school events and media exposure.

Our overall organizational vision is Every school an EcoSchool. This means empowering students to act as leaders, embedding conservation habits in the daily lives of students and staff, and enabling schools to develop strong cultures of environmentalism.

With this in mind, we aim to engage 1 million students and certify 50% of all Ontario schools by 2018 – the Ministry’s generous support will help us reach this vision!

“Early outreach for students and engagement with teachers and parents helps make energy conservation and environmental stewardship a priority for everyone in Ontario. Thanks to Ontario EcoSchools, we are raising today’s students to be tomorrow’s conservation and environmental leaders.” — Bob Chiarelli, Minister of Energy
