When planning for World Water Week in March (21-25), considering using Ontario EcoSchools new The Great Lakes: A Learning and Action Resource in the classroom and for whole-school awareness campaign ideas.
The kit includes a host of information about the Great Lakes, from facts about their history and geologic formation (did you know that the Great Lakes were formed from glacial erosion after the last Ice Age?), to profiles of each lake, to concerns about Great Lake ecosystem health and what actions you can take to help.
The activities and learning takes a systems approach to studying our natural resources: while each Great Lake is unique, it’s useful to think about the Great Lakes Basin as a complex system of moving parts, especially when delving into issues of human impact. For this reason, the kit includes information on impacts of human settlement, economic activity, and resource extraction and ideas on how to integrate a systems perspective into your Great Lakes curriculum and activities.
Finally, there is a template included that can help plan your school’s Great Lakes Awareness and Action Campaigns as well as ways to link your Great Lakes focus to the six sections of the Ontario EcoSchools program.

FUNDING
Now’s the time to prepare and apply for the RBC–Evergreen Watershed Champions Award. This grant recognizes classes that demonstrate learning about their local watershed and who take action to care for it. All schools from K-12 can apply by the deadline of Friday April 8th.
