GRAND PRIZE WINNER: Unionville Public School, Nature Buddies Outdoor Inquiry

1“We held a Nature Buddies outdoor inquiry and the whole school was involved! Kindies collected materials for ‘nature crowns.’ We built rafts to measure how fast our stream flows. We looked for invasive species. Kindies and grade 5s explored the history of the pond and caught all sorts of awesome critters! The grade 8s calculated the biotic index for the pond, and Grade 3s and 7s used GPS and a map. Grade 7s also studied the water chemistry and reported back to their Nature Buddies. ” (Unionville Public School, YRDSB)

SECOND PRIZE WINNER: Jack Miner Public School, EcoTeam-led hike & forest brochure

“Our EcoSchools team decided to host nature hikes for interested classes. We invited the classes to join us for a guided tour of the forest. Our EcoSchools team spent time in the forest prior to the event to plan and research the information we would share. We created a brochure to assist the EcoSchools team and teachers during the hikes. Additional copies of the EcoAction brochure will be available in the school office for anyone wishing to take a self-guided nature hike at a future date.” (Jack Miner Public School, DDSB)

THIRD PRIZE WINNER: Erin Mills Middle School, World Environment Week

3“From June 1-5, we celebrated World Environment Week! This included Bike to School Week, planting a butterfly garden with Credit Valley Horticultural Society who volunteered time and donated mulch and soil. As well, the Butterfly Network and Wild Spaces for Monarchs donated over 80 plants to attract butterflies and caterpillars. We played EcoGames in gym classes – led by Environment Club Members using “50 Green Games” and classes watched Planet in Focus videos with discussions afterwards.” (Erin Mills Middle School, PDSB)
