Our congratulations go to Saint-Noël-Chabanel Catholic Elementary School in Cambridge (CSDCCS), the first Francophone school in Ontario to engage in the Experienced EcoSchools Certification Cycle (EECC).

Saint-Noël-Chabanel adopted the EcoSchools program six years ago and has been impressing us ever since with strong environmental efforts. Owing to a strong adult involvement as well as an engaged student population, Saint-Noël-Chabanel has year after year implemented green habits such as energy conservation and waste reduction audits.

This year, the school decided to focus on waste-free lunches and promoting reusable water bottles. Teacher Laura Shurr explains another creative project: “We took sheets of paper from recycling bins around the school and created notepads to give away as prizes to students of our school who demonstrate their environmental engagement.” The notepads were distributed to students in classes that had generated the least waste during waste-free lunch days. Ms. Shurr explains that the notepads served as a motivation and reward as well as learning how to go green.

After such a tremendous pledge year, we cannot wait to see what this school will do next year. Our congratulations go to the EcoTeam of Saint-Noël-Chabanel for its sixth anniversary with Ontario EcoSchools and, above all, for deepening their program throughout the school and training a wonderful bunch of Eco-leaders!
