Encourage regular use of outdoor space

Prepare seasonal activities and supplies so students and teachers can get outside easily and frequently.

Tips:

  • Keep an Outdoor Activities binder in the staff room for everyone to reference and contribute to.
  • Create Outdoor Exploration kits with species-identification books, magnifying glasses, observation jars, et cetera that can be signed out, so students can learn about insects, trees, birds, and natural ecosystems.
  • Plan outdoor activities such as a scavenger hunt, finding items for each letter of the alphabet; outdoor yoga; or a school-ground cleanup.
  • Getting outside on a regular basis benefits students and teachers alike. Have students observe an area over time or check in on the space at different times of the year.
