As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, many schools are preparing for an entire week of festivities to celebrate. We’d like to share some ideas and resources with you – happy planning!

It is the 45th anniversary of Earth Day this year, and on April 1st, Earth Day Canada is giving away Earth Day Every Day Clean Commute toolkits, which have all the tools and information you’ll need to make low-carbon transportation choices: sign up now. Earth Day Canada also has many other resources to help you dream up some exciting Earth Day campaigns.

Last year, students from Franco-Supérieur in the Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boreales (CSDCAB) not only held an EcoExpo during Earth Week, but had a whole school assembly where students read aloud from David Suzuki’s Declaration of Interdependence.  This year, students hope to host another EcoExpo and create an awareness campaign about Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake in the world, which is right across the street from their school. Another dream of Franco-Supérieur’s Club de Terre is to have a chalk art day, where each class creates colourful Earth Day themes and messages on school walls, to inspire the greater community.

Finally, Ontario EcoSchools has some Earth Week Activity Ideas that your school can use to generate ideas for the week. We encourage you to check it out and do your own online research as well. Earth Week activities that involve learning and action with the whole school can be claimed in the Environmental Stewardship section of your Ontario EcoSchools program.
