EcoSchools Waste Audit
Learn more about your school’s waste and increase your diversion rate!
EcoSchools Canada is excited to announce a new partnership with GFL Environmental to launch a new waste audit program for K-12 schools.
What is the EcoSchools Waste Audit?
A waste audit identifies and measures the types of material generated in your waste stream. A waste audit is not only a great opportunity to learn more about waste streams at your school but it is also a requirement for schools with more than 350 persons (see Ontario Regulation 102/94 and 103/94).
The EcoSchools Waste Audit will offer an opportunity for students to learn more about the quantities and types of material in their schools’ waste stream and identify materials that can be recycled to increase waste diversion rates.
Schools that participate and take action will be able to earn points towards their certification through our Conduct a Waste Audit and Sort Your Waste action cards.

How it works

1. GFL will first complete a waste audit at one or more selected schools.

2. Students will be invited to participate in an interactive learning session where they will be shown different waste materials from their school and discuss issues and opportunities for waste reduction within their school and at home.

3. A raw data set of the audited waste materials will be provided to the school that teachers can use to engage students with real waste data. This data will be simplified so that it is easy to manipulate for use in classroom lessons.

4. Students can share their learnings to their entire school through announcements, newsletters and social media posts and take action to reduce waste based on the results.
