EcoSchools Canada is proud to launch the 2019-2020 Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) competition!

YRE is a global competition for budding young environmental journalists. Active in over 45 countries, each hosts a national competition with winners from three age groups contending in the international YRE competition.

Students are tasked with covering a local environmental story in one of three categories; Article, Photo, or Video. Stories must incorporate annual themes, and winners are selected by a national jury of industry experts.

Since 2008, YRE Canada has been run by our friends at Environmental Defence who are now passing on the competition to EcoSchools Canada and our network of passionate educators and students.

Last year’s winners entered from across the country and produced submissions showcasing incredible creativity and critical thinking skills. Among the excellent entrants was age 15-18 Photo winner Luckshana Ganeshananda from Vaughan, ON, who stood on top of the world by winning the international Photo competition with her submission “Stop Sucking the Life Out of Our Oceans.”

For the 2019-2020 competition, entries can be submitted until March 27, 2020 and must be communicated in English. This year’s themes are climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution. Rules and judging criteria can be found on the YRE website, along with resources for teachers and students, examples of past winners, and our full list of prizes.

And what a roster of prizes there are! Winning prizes this year include a virtual hangout with The Water Brothers, a published article in Alternatives Journal and ENV Media, and the potential opportunity to report at an international UN environmental conference.
