Create effective systems

Cutting back on food waste and packaging can have a big impact on the environment. Support and motivate weekly or daily waste-free and boomerang lunches by creating a fun reward system.

Tips:

  • Make it positive and voluntary: Students can volunteer to present their waste-free lunch to lunchroom monitors to be entered into a draw for a monthly prize rather than identify those who do not bring a waste-free lunch.
  • Create a “got it, need it” bin: Students with extra reusable containers can place them in the bin for students who might need it. Place the bin in the office or library for easy access.
  • Celebrate the classrooms who’ve worked hard at being waste free. Get creative: share a waste-free snack like popcorn or ice cream or award a golden lunch box.
